Top 10 Questions for Fashion Bloggers

There are a lot of questions for fashion bloggers out there. We get a lot of inquiries about what we do because they don’t quite get it. There are a lot of misconceptions and assumptions made, so I wanted to put all of the answers in one place. So, for the first post in my Blogging Series, I’m answering the top 10 questions for fashion bloggers that my friends and I get!

Top 10 Questions for Fashion Bloggers: Answered

    1. Why do you blog? – Submitted by Nataly
This is one of those questions for fashion bloggers that is different for everybody. I have always loved the idea of blogging and actually started two blogs that never got off the ground prior to Running in Heels. I started this blog under a different name to chronicle my training for my first marathon. By posting about my progress, I was held accountable and I actually grew a great online support system. After the marathon I realized that I was not cut out to have a fitness blog, so in March, I changed the name and re-branded everything, deciding to focus on fashion and style. When I left the fashion industry I really needed a creative outlet, and felt like Running in Heels was the place for me to  focus my creative energy.
    2. Does someone follow you around with a camera?
Ha! You have no idea how many people think this. To be completely honest, I thought that before I started and realized how impossible it would be to take photos, edit them, and write a blog all before work! So no, no one follows me around with a camera. I work with my blogger bestie Nataly, and we take each other’s photos on weekends.
    3. Can you just post photos of cute outfits and be done?
No, you can’t. The major bloggers who do this have been at it for years. They are the original bloggers of the industry, and honestly, I’m not sure how that works with Google. For my blog, I write a minimum of 300 words for each post, 1) because I enjoy writing and I feel like my photos are better when accompanied by a personality behind the person in the photos. 2) It helps with SEO and your Google search ranking. If you aren’t writing anything or using specific words you want to show up for, Google won’t know where to put you. So, if you’re on the third page and no one is clicking on your link, and you aren’t doing anything to show Google that you should be ranked higher, you’ll stay on the third page.
    4. What kind of camera do you use? – Submitted by Katie
To be honest, my camera is about 8 years old. It’s a Canon Rebel XS, which I don’t even think they make it anymore! However, I believe it’s less about the camera and more about the lens you use. I use a 50mm which I’ve been told is more like a 35mm on my camera.
    5. Where do you get your clothes?
I want Running in Heels as real as possible, so I actually purchase and wear most pieces on my blog in real life. Anything gifted or sponsored are pieces I genuinely like and wear in real life. My favorite stores to shop at are NordstromUrban Outfitters for clothes and apartment, J.Crew and J.Crew FactoryExpressAsosKate Spade for fun accessories, and Sephora for my make-up.
    6. How do you get your following? – Submitted by Jenna
This question has a lot of answers which I promise to cover in other posts! When you’re just starting out, my best advice would be to tell literally everyone. If your friends don’t support you how can you expect other people to? I find it’s easier to gain a following once you already have some people; a crowd draws a crowd.
Go to every event you can find, have business cards printed and hand them out. Nataly and I met at one of my first events and we’ve been friends ever since, now every time I go out, I make new friends and gain new followers! It’s so easy to pull out your phone and ask for someone’s Instagram account, follow them then they will follow you back right then and there.
    7. How do you get brand partnerships?
When I re-branded to Running in Heels, I joined a few influencers networks like Brand Backer and Influenster. They work with even the smallest bloggers and help you to get experience working with brands before you start reaching out to them on your own At some point brands started reaching out to me, and now I get to pick who I work with. I’ve also been recently reaching out to companies, which is newer for me, but much preferred because that way I am absolutely certain I love the product and feel great about recommending it to my readers.
    8. Do you blog full-time?
LOL. I get this question a ton, probably because it seems like I’m always blogging, but a lot of my posts and even social media is planned ahead of time, so I don’t have to post in real-time. I have a full-time job as a Social Media Manager/Team Leader at a small agency. A lot of my skills are transferable and I get to do what I love all day long while helping small businesses! I love my job and often work more than 40hrs a week.
    9. How do you find the time to blog and work full-time?
This one is tough, but when I started blogging again, I wanted it was real this time. I decided that I was going to invest in my site and I had to make sure it was would be worth it. All I did was build blogging into my schedule, so now it’s a habit. A lot of people will tell you to wake up early and get things done in the morning, but since I’m a night owl, I say just figure out when you’re most creative and plan to do a little each day. Set deadlines, and make a calendar so you know what you need to do.
    10. Do you make money? /How do you make money? – Submitted by Chloe and Mary
This is one of the most asked questions for fashion bloggers. The short answer is, yes. I use affiliate links, which means when you buy something from my links I get commission. There is no effect on the price or purchase process for you whatsoever! I’ve also worked with brands for payment. I charge for different types of posts and have several different packages to choose from. Granted, back to #8, it’s not enough to make it my full-time job!

I hope that cleared some of your questions for fashion bloggers. If you have more, let me know in the comments below or shoot an email to hello@runninginheelsblog.com! If you are a fashion blogger, what questions do you most commonly hear?

“First, I Need Coffee.” Top for Monday

First, I need coffee. Is it not the Monday-est Monday ever? Maybe because I know a lot of people have today off and I don’t. Oh well, social media never sleeps! Does anyone else need coffee before doing anything else in the morning? I’m addicted, so that’s why I needed to have this “First, I Need Coffee.” Top (c/o)! This is actually a look I wore this weekend, and not something I would wear to work, but it fits my mood. It’s just one of those days where it’s going to be long no matter what. Mondays are catch-up from the weekend, and two or three cups of coffee types of days.

This top is pretty comfy, I ended up wearing it all afternoon after shooting, ironically into a coffee shop. I will warn you that it’s only one size, so pay close attention to the measurements, I’d give the same advice for anything you order from SheIn. They have super cute pieces, but sizing is sometimes awkward. I loved the stripes on the sleeves here, which I was honestly not too sure about at first, and was so excited when I saw what this outfit looked like paired with my Adidas Superstars! Fun fact about my shoes: They are actually child-sized. They run one size large, and they were sold out in the size I needed. So I ended up ordering the kids version, which is exact;y the same but $10 less expensive!

If you haven’t yet noticed, I have really cute earrings on! These are courtesy of Rocksbox, my favorite way to find and rent new jewelry! I’ve already kept another pair of earrings, and am seriously considering these as well. Use code kaseygoedekerxoxo for a free month! Who else thought sale season was over? Well, I have more news. My watch is now on sale under $45! It’s a great everyday piece I received a few months ago (c/o), and have worn it a ton ever since! You know I love my watches, but this one is my most casual which makes it perfect for days like these!

    Turtleneck Sweaters and 2017 Goals

Running in Heels | Turtleneck Sweater | Winter Fashion

Happy hump day! It has warmed up here in Dallas, and I definitely can’t keep up with the weather and neither can my allergies! I’m living in a constant state of allergy season that I really wish would end! Since it’s still colder around the country and we all can’t have 40 degree mood weather swings, I’m posting this look Nataly and I shot a couple of weeks ago! I remember wearing turtleneck sweaters as a child, and I’ve been having trouble transitioning them to adulthood! However, I saw this one and decided to give the trend a go, and I seriously love it. It’s cozy and warm (you know, for when it’s actually winter here) and the distressed look adds a good updated flare that my childhood versions were missing. Paired with this lace-up mini (because you know I’m loving the lace up trend now!) and these printed tights, I feel like I really updated the turtleneck sweaters since middle school! What are trends that you guys wore when you were younger that are hard for you to try again?

I mentioned before that I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions. However, I think it’s important to set goals for ourself throughout the year. So, I wanted to talk about some ongoing goals I’ve been working towards.

    1. I post blogs pretty regularly, but my planning skills are seriously lacking. I really want to create monthly calendars to keep track of posts, holidays, and partnerships. My biggest issue with doing so is, that’s what I do all day for other people! It’s so hard coming home doing the same thing I did all day, I’m sure you can all relate to that!
    2. Being a morning person. I have absolutely no motivation to get out of bed in the morning. An alarm clock means literally nothing to me. It’s weird because I love my job, I have plenty to do with Running in Heels, and dogs that can always use more loving, so I have no idea what the issue is. Believe me I have read every article and blog post on “How to become a morning person” out there, and none have helped. So, advice is totally welcomed and encouraged in the comments!
    3. This kind of goes with #1, but I’d love to start planning my blog partnerships better as well. I want to start reaching out to more companies and be more in control of my content and when it is scheduled!
    4. I have an amazing dog park in my apartment complex, but with that I’ve gotten lazy with walking my dogs, convincing myself that they love playing with the other pups. Actually, they do, but that’s no replacement for spending time with me walking and working on training, not to mention my steps have gone down so far it’s like I barely move during the day!
    5. Which brings me to my last goal, getting back into a workout schedule. Last year I completed 2 half marathons and 1 full marathon in 6 months and really burnt out with running. So, I’ve taken a break and doing other things that have slowly fizzled out and turned into not working out at all in over the holidays. Now, I’m determined to get back in shape and on a regular work-out schedule!

What are your 2017 Goals? I’d love to hear them in the comments below! Also, would love some tips on my goals as well! You can shop my look below, and these linked turtleneck sweaters, including mine, are 50% off & now under $35!

Lace-Up Flats and a Suede Dress

Happy Monday everyone! I have to be honest with you, sometimes I like to roll out of bed, throw on a pair of jeans and put my hair into a pony tail and head to the office. Especially in the winter when my bed is just too warm and cozy to get up in the morning. However, sometimes you have to throw your coworkers a curve ball and dress up for the day. So, when I wore this suede dress and lace-up flats, I’m sure it was a bit of a surprise! You may remember this dress from a few months ago, but this time I had to wear a blouse underneath! Plus I told you, I’m all in with the lace-up trend now, so expect to see tons more of these lace-up flats!

I had a really great weekend where I got to meet some really amazing Dallas Bloggers at brunch and make new friends! The rest of my weekend was spent finally finishing my bedroom! I’ve been re-doing it for more than a month, got  new furniture, decor, and rearranged my wall decor and I am SO excited to be sitting on my bed in my newly completed room now! Aside from that Kale and I had an amazing night on Saturday! We went to Benihana and ate way too much food before heading to the movies to see Passengers. It was so much fun, and I am such a lucky girl to have a guy like him!

    The Miracle of Dry Shampoo

    It's a 10 Miracle Dry Shampoo & Conditioner

Is anyone else obsessed with dry shampoo? I swear it saves my hair day on a regular basis, it’s basically become a daily routine. There’s no way I am ever without it in my stash! I’ve tried so many different kinds and brands of hair products and dry shampoo, and I’ve found that I’m pretty picky. Some leave a white residue, some don’t do anything, and some leave my hair feeling more unwashed than it is, which at that point it is. Like I said I’ve tried tons, but there’s nothing quite like It’s a 10 Miracle Dry Shampoo & Conditioner (c/o)!

It’s a 10 does so much as soon as you spray it in (10 things actually), and this is what I liked the best: It makes my hair smell better which is seriously important. I can really only go one day without washing my hair, but some people can go much longer, so keeping it smelling fresh is so important! It absorbs excess oil. This is really the most important part of dry shampoo for me because my hair gets super oily even after the first day I don’t wash it. Weirdly enough, as I used this product I noticed that my hair felt smoother and more hydrated than it normally did on the second day. Finally, it adds shine and body, and texture. Sometime I use dry shampoo as I style my hair, so this It’s a 10 Miracle Dry Shampoo & Conditioner is perfect for adding texture because it still allows me to run my hands through hit through the day.

My layered top is sold out, as well as my wristlet, but I linked a ton of similar items! Now for a few codes that I’ve gotten from these amazing companies: Use code RUNNIGINHEELS for 15% off at Daniel Wellington, and code kaseygoedekerxoxo for your first month of Rocksbox free!

A Burgundy Sweater for the New Year

Happy 2017! I’m so excited for this year and everything in store. I already reviewed my year, so I won’t do it again here, but I do want to say thank you! You guys are all the best followers and amazing for supporting Running in Heels! OK how cute is this burgundy sweater? I partnered with Majestii boutique for this post and I love this burgundy/wine color for this season, it’s the perfect accent to my grey/black wardrobe! Although this was meant to be a sweater, when I tried it on with pants, the burgundy sweater was cute, but I just felt like it was too boring. So, I layered it over this grey knit dress, and voila, it’s a newly styled piece! Also did you notice the cutouts on the shoulders?  As you may have noticed, I’m not a fan of the true cold-shoulder style, but this burgundy sweater just has the small cutouts on the neck like this top, which I love!

Even though it’s been warmer here in Dallas these last few days, I’m still wearing sweaters. I guess old Ohio habits die-hard! It will be rough heading back to work today after the holidays. I feel like I’ve gained tons of weight from Christmas cookies and holiday meals, and NYE alcohol, so I am going to try my best to get back into shape! I’m thinking of signing up for another half marathon, what do you think? It will definitely help motivate me! What do you do to keep in shape? By the way, this is not a New Year Resolution. I really don’t believe in them. There’s nothing different about January 1 that is different from any other day, so if you have a goal, I say go for it.

Speaking of going for it, something I’m so happy I started this year is Rocksbox. I am so happy with everything I’ve received and it has really helped me step up my jewelry game! Check out my new earrings and necklace! Use code kaseygoedekerxoxo for your first month free!

Thank you to Majestii boutique, for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own.

The Best Posts and Instagrams of 2016

I can’t believe it’s almost 2017! It has been such an amazing year for me. I started Running in Heels, I landed my job as a Social Media Manager, I met Nataly of Beautifully Elegant Blog, got my second puppy Mia, and celebrated a year with my boyfriend, Kale. It has really been an amazing year and looking back, I can really see how far I’ve come. Do you believe I started 2016 with less than 400 Instagram followers? Crazy. So what I really want to say is thank you. The support of all of you, my friends, family, and readers, is really amazing. Thank you for reading, following, and supporting me through this amazing journey!

    Chunky Sweater and Tassels

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your families! I was so spoiled this year! Who knew I was that good? Today it’s as warm in Ohio as it is in Texas, so it’s like being home! This chunky sweater (c/o) is perfect for this crazy winter weather in any state. I love the mock neck on it, and the wide sleeves are super trendy! It’s cozy and warm, and can be styled so many ways! I chose to wear it with my white jeans and all the tassels! A chunky sweater is my favorite style for winter since I’m always cold. These tend to keep me warm and look cute at the same time! This chunky sweater is under $25 from Romwe, a chic online store perfect for things like this and this!

I ordered this tassel necklace on Cyber Monday along with these tassel loafers. I continue to add to my jewelry collection slowly, but surely. Also you may notice my little star pin. I received it in my FabFitFun box, and it is in support of the Starlight Foundation and brings “awareness to pediatric critical, chronic, and terminal illnesses.” I honestly love everything I receive in them, they always filled with amazing products. I’ve used just about everything I’ve received, and I’ve been getting them for a year.

These shoes are seriously out of the box for me. I’m usually a heels girl, and my flats are usually either sandals or sneakers! However, I’m getting more into them, and I am seriously loving these! They were so comfortable from the beginning, and I’ve been wearing them nonstop! I even brought them to Ohio with me for Christmas! I’m here for another couple of days and luckily get to take a couple of them off from work! I’ll be spending time with my family and seeing some friends, then heading back home to my pups!

    New Take on Lace-Up

Let me say first, I wasn’t originally on board with this lace-up trend, which is why it has taken me so long to post anything about it. If you follow me on Instagram, you saw my new lace-up flats, but this is the first piece of clothing I grabbed with the trend.

Why I liked it: It’s not the same thing that everyone else has. You see the V-neck lace-up sweater everywhere now, but even when I jump onto a trend I like to have my spin on it. This time, I reversed it! It’s like a surprise when you turn around, love that the back of this sweater laces up instead of the front. I’m all for the simplicity of this outfit, too. Especially this time of year, we all just need an easy way to look good running around like a crazy person (or is that just me?).

I cannot believe that Christmas is already THIS WEEKEND! If you haven’t seen it yet, check out my post where I talked about a few of my favorite Christmas traditions and my new Christmas pajamas! After a long day of work and travel (I was up at 3:30am!) I’m finally back with my family for the holidays and so ready for a break! Cheers to one more work day before a break! What are your holiday plans?

*Unfortunately my exact sweater is sold out, but I linked a bunch of other back lace-up sweaters, all under $50! P.S. if you like my watch, click here and use code RUNNINGINHEELS for 15% off!

    Morning Make-Up Routine

A few weeks ago I told you about my weekend beauty routine. I realized, though I never went through my actual day-to-day routine. Every day I have a similar morning make-up routine that I’ve perfected over the years. Every once in a while I switch out some products, and that’s why I love boxes like Lilee (c/o). They deliver a box of fun products each month ranging from beauty products, to home or kitchen accessories, or even fashion pieces!

I’ve gotten two boxes, and one was cocktail themed, and I received cocktail napkins, a muddler, mixing spoon, rim sugar, and even bitters! The other on I received was full of beauty products! I’m loving trying out all of these different products! Keep reading to see how I’ve fit them into my morning make-up routine!

    My Morning Make-Up Routine

    1. First thing I do is exfoliate my face with Kaplan MD Cell Renewing Microfoliant (from my Lilee box!) and cleanse with Nip & Fab Glycolic Fix Exfoliating Facial Pads.
    2. After letting my face dry I apply Better Skin Miracle Cream from my Lilee box which, if you‘ve tried Philosophy’s hope in a jar, it’s very similar. I am obsessed with this miracle cream, plus it’s less expensive.
    3. After letting the cream set I’ll apply Nip & Fab Vipe Venom Micro Blur primer to my face with my hands,
    4. Next comes the foundation. A few months ago I went to Sephora and had them do a skin test on me to help me choose my perfect foundation shade. They ask you a series of questions and take an up-close photo of your skin, and a few options pop up. Now, seriously this test is amazing, but definitely test them first! One was way off for the color, but my Laura Mercier Bamboo Beige was perfect, and I’ve used it ever since!
    5. Blush next comes blush. I am terrible with choosing blush, so I just pick a pink color from the Sephora line and it lasts forever.
    6. Then comes the fun part: Eye shadow. I use my Naked palette and start with a light base color. Then I choose a middle brown color for the outside, and a shimmer-y gold or peach for my inside corners.
    7. The next step isn’t pictured, because my eyeliner is about an inch big, but I use a dark green or charcoal color. and Line the top of my lids. I use either MAC or Urban Decay.
    8. Next is the best part: Mascara! I got Jelly Pong Pong Fairy Lashes mascara in my Lilee box as well, and it’s really good! I do have my old go-tos (YSL Babydoll and Benefit Roller Lash), but I love trying new ones and this is a great every-day-for-work mascara.
    9. OK I’m terrible at eye brows, but I am learning, and with the Chella pencil and highlighter pencil I got in my Lilee box, I think I’m actually getting better!
    10. The final touch is my lips! I like a little color, so I use my Bite Beauty pencil and finish it off with my Butter London (from Lilee!) lip gloss!

It is quite a process, but since it’s my daily routine, I got pretty quick with it!
