It’s official! Running in Heels turned 1-year-old last week! Life has been so crazy I actually missed it because I mixed up my dates! I did want to share my top blogging lessons and what is on the horizon for Running in Heels after the first Blog-aversary!
Lesson’s on my First Blog-aversary
Find your focus: I started a few blogs before Running in Heels, and my biggest struggle with them was that I wasn’t focused. Not in the content, not on my topic, and definitely not on my social media. We’ve all read about the importance of finding a focus for your target market to follow, and let me tell you, the minute I decided to stop posting photos of my tacos and focus on fashion my following started to grow.
Stay consistent: If you remember, I posted a post similar to this one back in August noting that I had been officially blogging for a year. When I started my goals was consistency and just learn what it takes to blog consistently and have a life. I also wanted accountability while I was training for my first marathon! Now I post 3 blogs a week and at least 2 times a day on Instagram, always within a couple of hours of one another.
Don’t underestimate the power of Social Media: While Instagram is great/frustrating/addicting *insert feelings on last post’s performance here*, it is also one of the places that I get the most traffic for my blog. As my Instagram grows, so does my blog readership, and that is not a coincidence! Social Media can build you up, but it can also tear you down. While these platforms have a lot of power, don’t let them have power over you. You, and you alone are in control of your success, not an algorithm.
Photography is important: In my first few months, I was taking my own photos with a tripod and a timer. Finally I met Nataly, and we started taking each other’s photos. This is the first time Nataly and I worked together, and we’ve been meeting at least once a week ever since! We’ve both come a long way! However, you also need to understand your camera and settings. I admittedly still need to work on this a lot. I usually blame my camera being old for photos not turning out how I want. Truthfully, there’s a lot to learn with photography, and it takes a lot to sit down and understand it all. I highly recommend it, though if you don’t plan to pay a photographer.
Have fun! At this point I’m putting tons of time and money into this blog. Make sure you love it. Blogging is stressful meeting deadlines and staying consistent. You’ll never get bored if you’re having fun with it!
Since we’re past my first blog-aversary, I’ve been thinking about what’s next for Running in Heels. I love doing this blogging series, but I founded Running in Heels on the premise of fashion. So, moving forward my blogging tips posts will only be once a month. However, I’ll still send out weekly tips for my email subscribers! Next, I’m starting a travel series next month as I trapse around the world for weddings and vacations. I am so excited for you to follow along!
Last March, I had high hopes for where Running in Heels would be by it’s first Blog-aversary. I am beyond thrilled with how it has grown and everything that has happened in this past year. It has been truely amazing! Thank you all so much for your support, I truely couldn’t have done all of this without my amaznig readers and followers!
My ideal weather is 75-90 degrees, so Texas is really one of the best places for me to live! It’s already gotten up to 90 here, so the shorts, striped top, and wedges are out and I’m ready to rock my spring and summer trends. I picked up a few fun pieces recently and they are perfectly aligned with the trends for the season, not to mention the ‘it’ shoe of the moment: Marc Fisher wedges.
While floral is the obvious choice for spring, I usually opt for a less obvious and less girly choice, like a striped top. When I saw this striped top at Target I thought it would be really great and versatile. Believe it or not, my first thought was to wear it to work, obviously not with the pictured look! The Who What Wear collection is killing it this season! And so is the Sugarfix Baublebar collab, which is where I got my earrings!
OK now for the shoes. Obviously, every blogger and their dog has them, but honestly I am so happy I made the leap. They are so comfy and come in cute colors, and make me so tall! I actually got mine here, for only $32! Here is another budget friendly option and I linked more options below because sizes are selling out quickly!
Last night we saw Beauty and The Beast, and it was amazing! It is one of my absolute favorite Disney movies, and I was not disappointed! I even cried a little at the end and I am so not a crier in the movies! Have you seen it yet? What did you think?
When I moved to Dallas almost 3 years ago (time flies!) my parents visited me in May, which happened to be the most rain Texas had gotten in years. Every time since then, when they visit it rains! My dad is convinced it isn’t actually sunny here in Dallas which is hilarious because it is, about every other day of the year! However when it rains, it pours, everything is bigger in Texas, even the raindrops! So, when Joules reached out to me about their Right as Rain collection, I was totally on board!
I chose this great Right as Rain woven rain coat and matching chelsea boots. It hasn’t rained yet, so I have yet to test out the functionality, but I have worn it a few time sand have gotten tons of compliments because it is so cute! I love the bright colors and fun floral print for spring! High rain boots are too hot for a Texas spring, but these little Right as Rain chelsea boots are the cutest and more comfortable to wear for longer periods of time.
This past weekend was full of fun events! I celebrated St. Patrick’s day, went to brunch with Yasmina from Dress Well Travel Often, and then had a couple of photo shoots with Luisa! Overall it was such a fun girls weekend and I’m ending it on the couch with Kale watching March Madness! I hope you all have a great start to your week!
I’ve been keeping this Daniel Wellington Classic Petite watch a secret for far too long! I’ve had this watch for 2 weeks and haven’t been able to share it with you! This Daniel Wellington Classic Petite watch launched on 3/16, featuring Kendall Jenner as the new face of the brand. You know, I love the name of this watch: Classic Petite. I feel like it fits my style very well. I usually have a pretty classic style, and I am pretty petite! I’m only 5’5″ and usually the smallest wherever I am! That’s why this watch fits my daily style so well.
I used to love the giant oversized watches that weighed down my whole arm, but since graduating, I’ve grown in to my style and I love a more classic look. I could have paired this watch with a beautiful dress because it is really very versatile, but I chose to pair this Classic Petite style with an every-day weekend look. I love Daniel Wellington watches for a couple of reasons. First, they are gorgeous, and second, they are so versatile! You can dress them up or down, and that is exactly what this new classic style portrays.
This weekend is one of the last ones off before the craziness of weddings and trips start. I’ll be seeing Kale, taking blog photos with Nataly, and definitely relaxing with my pups!
I have never felt more official than I do when I look at my logo in print, on my phone case! I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the first year of Running in Heels (coming up next week)! How stinking cute is this custom phone case from Boutique Me?! It was such an easy process to design and order my case. They have tons of color and style options, and you can customize and of them with a photo, logo, and/or initials!
I chose the Lifeproof case, but I usually choose really thin, not super protective phone cases. In this case (LOL), because I just got my iPhone 7 after Christmas, I chose a custom phone case that would actually protect my lifeline this time. I was happily surprised at how thin it is, and have no problems with it fitting in my pocket or bag. It’s better than I expected, and oh so cute thanks to my design skills (another LOL because I have none) and Boutique Me making it so simple to choose my colors and place my logo!
While I did get the pink custom phone case, because it matches my blog colors, I am more of a neutral-lover. This dress, while yes, it’s purple, It’s a purple-y grey which is one of my favorite colors! Let me tell you about this dress. It’s soft and comfortable, and I plan on wearing it at least once a week this spring! I love the trendy take on my usual knit swing dress. The only thing it is missing, is pockets for my phone case (ok the phone too)! I paired this dress with my new soon-to-be worn daily wedges. I promised myself I wouldn’t buy them because everyone and their dog has them, but when I saw the price I couldn’t pass them up! These Marc Fisher dupes are only $32, much better when compared to the $60 and $150+ versions! I linked my whole outfit below.

Thank you to Boutique Me for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own!
Happy Monday! I had such a great weekend starting with dinner at Fogo De Chao on Friday night! On Saturday, we celebrated at a couples shower this weekend and ate too much cake and drank mimosas! Saturday night we just watched Big Bang Theory and ate pizza. On Sunday Nataly and I went to the mall and shot photos of some of our new pieces! Keep up on Insta-stories or click here to see what I got! For this post I partnered up with The Alysia to show you their beautiful snake-skin heels and how I styled them!
One trend I’m loving for spring is the bell sleeve. This bell sleeve top that I paired with my Alysia snake-skin heels also has a fun sleeve detail with bows and cutouts! AND it’s under $30! I love investing in good pieces (especially shoes), but I can’t have an entire wardrobe of expensive pieces, which is why I love pieces like this fun and trendy bell sleeve top!
This week I’ve got a ton of great posts and plans! I am so excited to share them all with you! So far I plan to head to yoga and relax before the craziness of wedding sand travels start! I know it will come faster than I think! Last but not least, I added some photos here of my trip to Savoy Sorbet! Since I went to see their facility last week, I have tried tons of flavors by themselves and in cocktails, and they are amazing, guys! If you are in Dallas pick some up the next time you are at Central Market or Royal Blue, if not, order some here!
We’ve all experienced it at some point: writer’s block. When you have your laptop open and your coffee or wine glass is full, but no words are coming out of you. You have no idea what to say! Writing 3-5 posts/week can take a lot out of you, so it’s natural to feel stuck sometimes. So what happens next? Do you not post? What if it lasts for weeks? Absolutely not an option. I’ve laid out my best tips on how to beat writers block for fashion bloggers.
How to Beat Writer’s Block for Fashion Bloggers
Put pen to paper (so to speak). I actually do use a physical planner to plan out content topics, so I usually have a good idea of what I’m posting ahead of time. But even if I know the outfit I’m posting, it’s not always easy to crank out 300 words. So the best way to get there is just to start.
Start with the outfit. I like to choose my photos first and then fill in with words. I can write about the hero piece a bit, then the store, and then other details of the outfit I want to mention. That usually gets me at least a paragraph!
Talk about YOU. Chances are, your followers like you, and they want to know what is going on in your life! Talk about your week, your day, your plans, your family, anything! The best content you have is your life, and I guarantee it’s more interesting than you think!
Browse other blogs. I’m going to add a strong disclaimer here. DO NOT COPY. However, seeing what other bloggers are talking about can spark your own ideas, just make sure they actually are your own ideas!
Keep a list. I keep an ever-growing list in my notes app on my phone of topics for my Friday Blogging Tips series. This series is my favorite to write about, but also my biggest challenge since I’m still a newer blogger.
Ask your audience. When I started this series I needed to know if it was something people wanted to read, and what they wanted to read. So, I asked, and people responded!
Writer’s Block is completely mental and the hardest thing to do when you have it is start, but if you just write something you’ll find a story, and generate an amazing post out of it!
First, Happy International Women’s Day! It’s official, the off-the-shoulder trend has moved into lounge-wear and I could not be more excited! This ots sweatshirt is a top I can wear out on the weekend and still be comfy and stay on trend! I paired it with this adorable clutch (c/0) and my open toed booties which are a very trend new for me! I love these (and they’re under $30!), even though I wasn’t too sure about open toed booties, for the price, I felt like I could take the risk, and I am so happy I did! This ots sweatshirt will be so great for the Texas spring! It can never decide whether to be hot or cold, so this is perfect for either! I have started breaking out my other ots tops for this season as well. I’m so happy the trend is going strong!
Earlier this week I told you I was going to be doing some new blog things, and I’m so excited to share the news now that everything is confirmed! Today I will be taking a quick-lunch break from work and head over to Savoy Sorbet to see their production process (and hopefully sample some). In other food-related news, a new Brazilian steakhouse, Fogo De Chao opened up here in Dallas, and they invited me and Kale to come try them out! It’s so perfect because we were already talking about going, so we are beyond excited to be some of the first people there while it is just opening!
I hope you all had a great weekend! I for one am sad its over. Onto a new week full of fun activities. I’m doing a few blog things that are a little new for me, so definitely keep up on insta-stories for more news! Today I’m rocking my knit dress found at Macy’s Backstage for under $15 (seriously if you haven’t checked them out DO IT), and my 12-year-old denim jacket. If you think I’m kidding, it’s from PacSun and the sleeves are always rolled up because they’re too short.
I chose my leopard lace-up flats because I wanted something cute and comfy but I could still wear in this weird weather we’ve got going on in Dallas. It’s really hot one day, and then cold again the next. I haven’t quite broken out the sandals yet. It seems like people just wear them year round here! I don’t even have sandals on my radar, but I really should because vacation is only a couple of months away!
I love a good knit dress! They are the best thing to wear, period. I could live in them. I have a great range of colors, prints, and styles, now in my wardrobe, and I love how comfortable they are! Plus they’re easy to dress up or down depending on the occasion. They are my go-to for spring and summer.
Something else I’m wearing that is new is my lip color. This Burberry Lip Velvet is a gorgeous color an stays on for hours through eating and drinking! I wore it to the Chic Occasion event this past weekend and it lasted the entire event, plus into the rest of my night. I wear it all the time now, and absolutely love it!
We talk a lot about being authentic, and the words you choose are very important. I’ve compiled 3 words to never use as a fashion blogger.
About the Words to Never Use
We want to be trustworthy sources for our audience. Being honest and authentic is a huge part of that. The second someone doesn’t believe what you’re saying you’ve lost their trust and lost a follower. They can’t trust you, so they won’t want to hear your opinion. They have to know that what you’re writing is actually what you think, not what some company paid you to write. (Side note: don’t bash a company if you don’t like what they sent you, there are other ways to handle that.)
This is true even more so with sponsored posts. A lot of the time we’ll work with newer companies or boutiques we haven’t heard of or shopped at before they reached out to us, so be honest and let your followers know about your first time experience. Aside from the honesty aspect, there are a few easy ways to not get caught sounding inauthentic (even accidentally) to your audience. Below I’ve compiled 3 words to never use as a fashion blogger: never, always, and favorite.
Never?! About this post title… Yes I did it on purpose! Of course you’ll use these words, they’re natural and in our vocabulary. However it’s important to avoid over use, and only say it when you mean it! Or, the other option, which is what happened here, to create a catchy title! I got your attention, didn’t I?
3 Words to Never use Use as a Fashion Blogger
Never: Ha! Ok you caught me, I explain more below. It’s true, though! Saying you never do something or would wear something is not something you can guarantee. A year ago I would have told you that I’d never wear open toed booties, and here I am loving my new pair!
Always: Another definite statement that you can’t guarantee. You always do your make up like this or use the same face wash, what happens when a new company sends you a different face wash? You can’t always use that too, so just be careful.
Favorite: We all have a “favorite” sweater, pair of jeans, etc of the moment, but you can only have so many favorites until people stop believing you. Choose your favorites wisely, and keep them farther and fewer between!
Thank you for reading! I’d love your feedback below, do you like my Blogging Tips Series? Do you have any questions or topics you’d like me to cover? I would LOVE to hear from you!
