    An Alternative Option for VDay

    Alternative option for VDay

To be completely honest, I’m already over Valentine’s Day. In my last post I wrote about actually loving the day and what it stands for, but the flip side of VDay, is the over-commercialization of it all. I mean, Bloggers (like me) have been posting about VDay for more than 2 weeks now, trying to get you prepared, and really, I’ve seen more guft guides and red dresses than I know what to do with. So here’s my alternative option for VDay. A purple dress with edgy styling.

I like to mix things up a bit and if you look in my coat closet you’ll find that it’s at least half leather/faux leather. So what better way to mix it up than with an edgy alternative option for VDay. If I wear a dress when it’s cold out, you better believe I’m also wearing tights.  We’ve already determined I’m not fit for the cold anymore, so they are definitely a must! Another piece of my edgy look are my earrings. They are so cool, I get compliments every time I wear them. Two words: gold leather. Thanks to Ayla Jane Designs, my earrings and jewelry in general are a thousand times better than before and so much better than something I’d find in a department store. (I’ve told you many times how awful my jewelry collection was.)

    Wrap Dress for Valentine’s Day

I don’t know what it is about the month of February, but pink and red are the staple colors all month-long. I don’t really wear a lot of pink  or red, but I have been loving burgundy/wine tones this season. I found this wrap dress at the Free People store sample sale a few weeks ago and thought it would be perfect for a Valentine’s Day date! This wrap dress is silk so it’s a little more dressed up even though the actual style isn’t anything too fancy. I really love this one because how it wraps it allows for easily adjustment of the waistline. Most wrap dresses or skirts don’t fit me snugly enough around the waist because of where the straps loop through.

Since this wrap dress was a sample (meaning it was returned to that store), I wasn’t able to find this exact dress, however I found this one that is remarkably similar, and some great alternative options below for you to try out! Of course I’m carrying my favorite bag. It’s seriously one of my best purchases. This black clutch, with the chain removable strap. I carry it all the time! Another accessory I’m loving? This adorable choker. I got it in my latest Rocksbox, and guys, Rocksbox has had me stepping up my jewelry game so hard recently! I love how I get really fun pieces anytime I want! Try it out for free with code kaseygoedekerxoxo!

OK lets talk plans. Last year Kale and I went out for a really nice dinner date and it was seriously so good! We didn’t do big gifts or anything, which I honestly prefer. With one exception, before I met Kale, I didn’t have any Valentine’s Day when I was dating anyone, so I’m new to this whole celebrating as a couple thing. Growing up, I always celebrated Valentine’s Day with my family, but it was never a romantic thing until last year with Kale. We went out for a fabulous dinner date and had a wonderful time. Personally I think that Valentine’s Day is over commercialized, with extravagant gifts, but I believe it is about being with and celebrating your love for one another. So pick out a pretty dress and enjoy each other’s company. Put down the phone and turn off instagram, and really spend some time together. It’s the best gift you can give a loved one, really.

Work with Brands as a New Blogger

Work with Brands as a New Blogger | Running in Heels | Blogging Tips

I have been working with brands since before I even launched Running in Heels. It told you about my blogging journey in this post, and how I have had a blog since August 2015. However, I wasn’t sure what it was going to turn into for a while, so I just posted anything and everything. As I was figuring my focus out, I stumbled upon a site that allowed you to apply for campaigns. To my surprise, with my 500 Instagram followers, I was accepted! Since then a month has not gone by without a partnership, so get started early and learn how to work with brands as a new blogger!

Why You Need to Work with Brands as a New Blogger

Of course everyone wants free products and clothes, but aside from the fun part there is a real reason you should consider partnering with brands right as you start blogging. Brands want to see a media kit, which is basically your resume for blogging. They want to know that you understand how partnerships work and know how you handle promoting products. Its like searching for a job, unfortunately, everyone wants you to already have 5 years of experience for an entry-level position. While the job thing has always mystified me, I do have some workarounds and solutions for how you can work with brands as a new blogger.

How to Work with Brands as a New Blogger

First, don’t set your sights too high. I love Nordstrom too, but take a look at who these companies are working with. If they have hundreds of thousands of followers and you have 500, it’s not going to happen. (Not yet, at least!)

I got started by signing up for a couple of Influencer networks. All of my first partnerships were through BrandBacker, and I still use it occasionally. This is a really great network for Beauty Bloggers! Another network I got started with early on was Influenster. At first they send you sample sizes of products, but as you grow, so do your products!

Another way to work with companies is to reach out to local stores or boutiques. If you don’t have many followers a lot of people will turn you down even if you’re just asking for free product, however there is another option. If you’re looking to build your media kit, you can always go to local boutiques and request to borrow their clothes to shoot in! Many wouldn’t say no to free publicity, and when you do get big, you’ve got a partner for a long time!

Finally, be honest. Don’t tell everyone you’ve been using a product for years if you tried it for the first time last week. With beauty products, take your time to actually try the product. The company will want you to actually see the effects and be honest about them. Just be fair, don’t take a month unless it actually requires that much time to take effect like this post, and give them a timeline when they can expect your posts.

    Best Purchase of 2016

2016 was a fantastic year for me. I started blogging, got a job that I love, met a ton of new friends, and got my puppy, Mia! While I am obsessed with Mia, it feels weird calling my dog a purchase, so my best purchase of 2016 is my Kate Spade bag. ( Check the bottom of the post for the other posts in this link-up!)

Growing up, getting a new bag was a big deal. I loved switching out purses to match my outfit or the season. Now, I like to keep everything in one place. If you switch, that one lipstick that would match your outfit would no doubt always be in the other bag, along with what I’d more likely forget to switch over, my wallet. This bag was a big purchase for me. I don’t regularly go out and buy something like this without Christmas or Birthday money, either. However, some of you may know, this past summer, I worked at Kate Spade part-time. It was great, but time-consuming. I basically didn’t have a life outside of working my full-time job, part-time job, and blogging. I realized I needed my weekends to recharge, and no discount was going to be worth it to give that up, I chose my final pieces to purchase with my discount. This was on my list for a while but making the decision to quit was my realization that I had to act on my thoughts.

I love the color, it’s purple, but nothing too obnoxious, and compliments my neutral wardrobe well. It’s not too structured, and *sigh* the pebble leather. While I love that Kate Spade’s Saffiano Leather is easy to clean, it’s just not soft enough for my style most of the time. I’m obsessed with pebble leather and truly love this bag. After writing all of this I realized I never checked to see if it was in stock for you all to buy, since I sold it so well just now. (ha!) UPDATE: It is in stock, in black. (I would love this in black!) Plus, it’s on sale! I have linked below along with the other pieces in the collection, and some of my favorite Kate Spade bags!

Brunch Outfit for Dallas Blogger Brunch

    Leather Leggings for Brunch

Happy Monday! I had such a fun weekend!  I went to Dallas Blogger Brunch at The Americano in The Joule Hotel, and it was so much fun to meet more Dallas bloggers! In case I haven’t gotten this message across yet, one of my absolute favorite things about blogging is meeting new people! I have made more friends blogging than I ever would have otherwise. It’s great because not matter what you blog about or how big or small your audience is, you all share the same goals and struggles in common. I wore a comfy and cute brunch outfit and snapped a few photos after we ate!

My brunch outfit was a last-minute decision. I rarely ever choose my outfits the night before. Even on shoot days, I’m throwing accessories in my bag as I’m running out the door.  I usually prefer to have at least one day a week where I don’t have to get dressed and leave the house, but that doesn’t usually happen. So the next best option for my brunch outfit was to wear leggings out! These leather leggings look cute and are still so comfy! I paired them with one of my favorite blouses which is currently on sale and comes in tons of colors! It’s still chilly here in Dallas, so this coat has been one of my favorite pieces. I got it in August at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, put it away for months, and pulled it out when the weather finally dropped to the 50s and 60s. Unfortunately it isn’t still available, but I linked a few similar coats that have this look!

Top 10 Questions for Fashion Bloggers

There are a lot of questions for fashion bloggers out there. We get a lot of inquiries about what we do because they don’t quite get it. There are a lot of misconceptions and assumptions made, so I wanted to put all of the answers in one place. So, for the first post in my Blogging Series, I’m answering the top 10 questions for fashion bloggers that my friends and I get!

Top 10 Questions for Fashion Bloggers: Answered

    1. Why do you blog? – Submitted by Nataly
This is one of those questions for fashion bloggers that is different for everybody. I have always loved the idea of blogging and actually started two blogs that never got off the ground prior to Running in Heels. I started this blog under a different name to chronicle my training for my first marathon. By posting about my progress, I was held accountable and I actually grew a great online support system. After the marathon I realized that I was not cut out to have a fitness blog, so in March, I changed the name and re-branded everything, deciding to focus on fashion and style. When I left the fashion industry I really needed a creative outlet, and felt like Running in Heels was the place for me to  focus my creative energy.
    2. Does someone follow you around with a camera?
Ha! You have no idea how many people think this. To be completely honest, I thought that before I started and realized how impossible it would be to take photos, edit them, and write a blog all before work! So no, no one follows me around with a camera. I work with my blogger bestie Nataly, and we take each other’s photos on weekends.
    3. Can you just post photos of cute outfits and be done?
No, you can’t. The major bloggers who do this have been at it for years. They are the original bloggers of the industry, and honestly, I’m not sure how that works with Google. For my blog, I write a minimum of 300 words for each post, 1) because I enjoy writing and I feel like my photos are better when accompanied by a personality behind the person in the photos. 2) It helps with SEO and your Google search ranking. If you aren’t writing anything or using specific words you want to show up for, Google won’t know where to put you. So, if you’re on the third page and no one is clicking on your link, and you aren’t doing anything to show Google that you should be ranked higher, you’ll stay on the third page.
    4. What kind of camera do you use? – Submitted by Katie
To be honest, my camera is about 8 years old. It’s a Canon Rebel XS, which I don’t even think they make it anymore! However, I believe it’s less about the camera and more about the lens you use. I use a 50mm which I’ve been told is more like a 35mm on my camera.
    5. Where do you get your clothes?
I want Running in Heels as real as possible, so I actually purchase and wear most pieces on my blog in real life. Anything gifted or sponsored are pieces I genuinely like and wear in real life. My favorite stores to shop at are NordstromUrban Outfitters for clothes and apartment, J.Crew and J.Crew FactoryExpressAsosKate Spade for fun accessories, and Sephora for my make-up.
    6. How do you get your following? – Submitted by Jenna
This question has a lot of answers which I promise to cover in other posts! When you’re just starting out, my best advice would be to tell literally everyone. If your friends don’t support you how can you expect other people to? I find it’s easier to gain a following once you already have some people; a crowd draws a crowd.
Go to every event you can find, have business cards printed and hand them out. Nataly and I met at one of my first events and we’ve been friends ever since, now every time I go out, I make new friends and gain new followers! It’s so easy to pull out your phone and ask for someone’s Instagram account, follow them then they will follow you back right then and there.
    7. How do you get brand partnerships?
When I re-branded to Running in Heels, I joined a few influencers networks like Brand Backer and Influenster. They work with even the smallest bloggers and help you to get experience working with brands before you start reaching out to them on your own At some point brands started reaching out to me, and now I get to pick who I work with. I’ve also been recently reaching out to companies, which is newer for me, but much preferred because that way I am absolutely certain I love the product and feel great about recommending it to my readers.
    8. Do you blog full-time?
LOL. I get this question a ton, probably because it seems like I’m always blogging, but a lot of my posts and even social media is planned ahead of time, so I don’t have to post in real-time. I have a full-time job as a Social Media Manager/Team Leader at a small agency. A lot of my skills are transferable and I get to do what I love all day long while helping small businesses! I love my job and often work more than 40hrs a week.
    9. How do you find the time to blog and work full-time?
This one is tough, but when I started blogging again, I wanted it was real this time. I decided that I was going to invest in my site and I had to make sure it was would be worth it. All I did was build blogging into my schedule, so now it’s a habit. A lot of people will tell you to wake up early and get things done in the morning, but since I’m a night owl, I say just figure out when you’re most creative and plan to do a little each day. Set deadlines, and make a calendar so you know what you need to do.
    10. Do you make money? /How do you make money? – Submitted by Chloe and Mary
This is one of the most asked questions for fashion bloggers. The short answer is, yes. I use affiliate links, which means when you buy something from my links I get commission. There is no effect on the price or purchase process for you whatsoever! I’ve also worked with brands for payment. I charge for different types of posts and have several different packages to choose from. Granted, back to #8, it’s not enough to make it my full-time job!

I hope that cleared some of your questions for fashion bloggers. If you have more, let me know in the comments below or shoot an email to hello@runninginheelsblog.com! If you are a fashion blogger, what questions do you most commonly hear?

“First, I Need Coffee.” Top for Monday

First, I need coffee. Is it not the Monday-est Monday ever? Maybe because I know a lot of people have today off and I don’t. Oh well, social media never sleeps! Does anyone else need coffee before doing anything else in the morning? I’m addicted, so that’s why I needed to have this “First, I Need Coffee.” Top (c/o)! This is actually a look I wore this weekend, and not something I would wear to work, but it fits my mood. It’s just one of those days where it’s going to be long no matter what. Mondays are catch-up from the weekend, and two or three cups of coffee types of days.

This top is pretty comfy, I ended up wearing it all afternoon after shooting, ironically into a coffee shop. I will warn you that it’s only one size, so pay close attention to the measurements, I’d give the same advice for anything you order from SheIn. They have super cute pieces, but sizing is sometimes awkward. I loved the stripes on the sleeves here, which I was honestly not too sure about at first, and was so excited when I saw what this outfit looked like paired with my Adidas Superstars! Fun fact about my shoes: They are actually child-sized. They run one size large, and they were sold out in the size I needed. So I ended up ordering the kids version, which is exact;y the same but $10 less expensive!

If you haven’t yet noticed, I have really cute earrings on! These are courtesy of Rocksbox, my favorite way to find and rent new jewelry! I’ve already kept another pair of earrings, and am seriously considering these as well. Use code kaseygoedekerxoxo for a free month! Who else thought sale season was over? Well, I have more news. My watch is now on sale under $45! It’s a great everyday piece I received a few months ago (c/o), and have worn it a ton ever since! You know I love my watches, but this one is my most casual which makes it perfect for days like these!

    Turtleneck Sweaters and 2017 Goals

Running in Heels | Turtleneck Sweater | Winter Fashion

Happy hump day! It has warmed up here in Dallas, and I definitely can’t keep up with the weather and neither can my allergies! I’m living in a constant state of allergy season that I really wish would end! Since it’s still colder around the country and we all can’t have 40 degree mood weather swings, I’m posting this look Nataly and I shot a couple of weeks ago! I remember wearing turtleneck sweaters as a child, and I’ve been having trouble transitioning them to adulthood! However, I saw this one and decided to give the trend a go, and I seriously love it. It’s cozy and warm (you know, for when it’s actually winter here) and the distressed look adds a good updated flare that my childhood versions were missing. Paired with this lace-up mini (because you know I’m loving the lace up trend now!) and these printed tights, I feel like I really updated the turtleneck sweaters since middle school! What are trends that you guys wore when you were younger that are hard for you to try again?

I mentioned before that I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions. However, I think it’s important to set goals for ourself throughout the year. So, I wanted to talk about some ongoing goals I’ve been working towards.

    1. I post blogs pretty regularly, but my planning skills are seriously lacking. I really want to create monthly calendars to keep track of posts, holidays, and partnerships. My biggest issue with doing so is, that’s what I do all day for other people! It’s so hard coming home doing the same thing I did all day, I’m sure you can all relate to that!
    2. Being a morning person. I have absolutely no motivation to get out of bed in the morning. An alarm clock means literally nothing to me. It’s weird because I love my job, I have plenty to do with Running in Heels, and dogs that can always use more loving, so I have no idea what the issue is. Believe me I have read every article and blog post on “How to become a morning person” out there, and none have helped. So, advice is totally welcomed and encouraged in the comments!
    3. This kind of goes with #1, but I’d love to start planning my blog partnerships better as well. I want to start reaching out to more companies and be more in control of my content and when it is scheduled!
    4. I have an amazing dog park in my apartment complex, but with that I’ve gotten lazy with walking my dogs, convincing myself that they love playing with the other pups. Actually, they do, but that’s no replacement for spending time with me walking and working on training, not to mention my steps have gone down so far it’s like I barely move during the day!
    5. Which brings me to my last goal, getting back into a workout schedule. Last year I completed 2 half marathons and 1 full marathon in 6 months and really burnt out with running. So, I’ve taken a break and doing other things that have slowly fizzled out and turned into not working out at all in over the holidays. Now, I’m determined to get back in shape and on a regular work-out schedule!

What are your 2017 Goals? I’d love to hear them in the comments below! Also, would love some tips on my goals as well! You can shop my look below, and these linked turtleneck sweaters, including mine, are 50% off & now under $35!

Lace-Up Flats and a Suede Dress

Happy Monday everyone! I have to be honest with you, sometimes I like to roll out of bed, throw on a pair of jeans and put my hair into a pony tail and head to the office. Especially in the winter when my bed is just too warm and cozy to get up in the morning. However, sometimes you have to throw your coworkers a curve ball and dress up for the day. So, when I wore this suede dress and lace-up flats, I’m sure it was a bit of a surprise! You may remember this dress from a few months ago, but this time I had to wear a blouse underneath! Plus I told you, I’m all in with the lace-up trend now, so expect to see tons more of these lace-up flats!

I had a really great weekend where I got to meet some really amazing Dallas Bloggers at brunch and make new friends! The rest of my weekend was spent finally finishing my bedroom! I’ve been re-doing it for more than a month, got  new furniture, decor, and rearranged my wall decor and I am SO excited to be sitting on my bed in my newly completed room now! Aside from that Kale and I had an amazing night on Saturday! We went to Benihana and ate way too much food before heading to the movies to see Passengers. It was so much fun, and I am such a lucky girl to have a guy like him!

    The Miracle of Dry Shampoo

    It's a 10 Miracle Dry Shampoo & Conditioner

Is anyone else obsessed with dry shampoo? I swear it saves my hair day on a regular basis, it’s basically become a daily routine. There’s no way I am ever without it in my stash! I’ve tried so many different kinds and brands of hair products and dry shampoo, and I’ve found that I’m pretty picky. Some leave a white residue, some don’t do anything, and some leave my hair feeling more unwashed than it is, which at that point it is. Like I said I’ve tried tons, but there’s nothing quite like It’s a 10 Miracle Dry Shampoo & Conditioner (c/o)!

It’s a 10 does so much as soon as you spray it in (10 things actually), and this is what I liked the best: It makes my hair smell better which is seriously important. I can really only go one day without washing my hair, but some people can go much longer, so keeping it smelling fresh is so important! It absorbs excess oil. This is really the most important part of dry shampoo for me because my hair gets super oily even after the first day I don’t wash it. Weirdly enough, as I used this product I noticed that my hair felt smoother and more hydrated than it normally did on the second day. Finally, it adds shine and body, and texture. Sometime I use dry shampoo as I style my hair, so this It’s a 10 Miracle Dry Shampoo & Conditioner is perfect for adding texture because it still allows me to run my hands through hit through the day.

My layered top is sold out, as well as my wristlet, but I linked a ton of similar items! Now for a few codes that I’ve gotten from these amazing companies: Use code RUNNIGINHEELS for 15% off at Daniel Wellington, and code kaseygoedekerxoxo for your first month of Rocksbox free!
