Amika Hair Products Reviews

If you’ve been around this blog before you know we take hair seriously! Choosing the right products for your hair type can be the most impactful for healthy hair and scalp. I love trying new hair products and finding what works best for my hair. Before testing something new, I usually chat with my stylist about what works best for me and she helps me find new things to try. I learned about Amika through her, I purchased products to test out and stuck with them through the recent years. Amika is an accessible salon-raised hair care brand, today I am sharing my honest review of the products I have tried and whether they are worth the purchase!

Amika Hair Products Reviews

Beginning in 2007, Amika was born in Brooklyn and raised in salons. With 11 collections, there are products for every hair type. They use 100% recyclable materials, are certified by Climate Neutral and offset carbon emissions, are B-corp certified, and partner with Provenance, which helps protect customers from greenwashing language by connecting claims to evidence for consumer transparency.

When I picked up my first bottle of shampoo, I just loved the smell and how my hair felt when I left the salon. Amika sustainably sources sea buckthorn which is one of the most potent natural ingredients; a superfruit, key for a healthy scalp and hair.

Normcore Signature Shampoo

Normcore is Amika’s signature shampoo in the signature collection. It is sulfate-free and packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Those with fine hair to medium hair types, or 1-2c, should use this collection. Normcore shampoo is packed with sea buckthorn, a plant-based fatty-acid omega 7 typically found in fish oil. It is also rich in vitamins C and A and antioxidants for that soft healthy feeling. Finally, Normcore has coconut acid for that great lather.

This shampoo is a classic and works well on my finer hair. It smells amazing and always leaves it feeling clean and healthy.

Velveteen Dream Smoothing Conditioner

The Velveteen Dream Smoothing Conditioner preps frizzy unmanageable hair for styling, keeping it smooth and silky. This conditioner is great for color-treated hair and helps to manage dry strands with sea buckthorn, aloe barbadensis leaf juice which adds luster and allows hair to hold natural moisture, and provitamin b5.

I love adding this smoothing conditioner to my routine because my wavy natural hair is prone to frizz, especially since I don’t typically style it right after I shower. This conditioner helps tame the dry strands and keeps my color looking great, and hair feeling smooth and soft.

Power Hour Curl Defining Spray

This lightweight curl restoring spray helps to define curls, moisturize, and revitalize curls and waves. I have naturally wavy hair, and when I want to wear it naturally, I use this spray to help define and style my waves. It also helps on day two or three to refresh and restyle my waves. Key ingredients include as buckthorn, tapioca starch to hold and soften curls, and soybean extract with amino acids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals.

The Wizard Silicone-Free Detangling Hair Primer

This detangling and heat-protecting spray has had an upgrade, The Wizard is now silicone-free. The lightweight primer can protect against up to 450-degree heat, can help cut down on blow dry time and help reduce frizz. You’ll mist onto damp hair and detangle with fingers or a wide-tooth comb (I use a wet brush!), then air dry or blow dry depending on your preference. The key ingredients in The Wizard are sea buckthorn and squalane for hydration and restoring lipid barriers.

I use this every time I wash my hair to detangle and I have noticed a major difference in brushing my hair with vs without it. I also love that it has heat protection for when I do blow dry and curl.

Perk Up Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is a product that I try not to use often, but I always have it on hand for those emergency days when a hat just won’t do. Perk Up is talc-free, it is made to absorb oils, reduce odor, and give a refreshed look to hair.

I love it because it doesn’t leave that white residue behind and really makes my hair smell great. The key ingredients include sea buckthorn and rice starch which is a natural rice starch (versus the usual aluminum) for oil absorption.

Un-Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray

When I don’t use dry shampoo but need extra volume, I grab Un-Done. I also use it when I curl my hair to add texture. My hair is very smooth and lands very tame, so when I want a bit more of a texture or messy look, I add Un-Done Texture Spray. Zeolite builds volume and texture, and like the dry shampoo, rice starch absorbs dirt and oils for a matte texture, and of course the last key ingredient is sea buckthorn, like all of Amika’s products.

Is Amika Worth It

I love Amika products and they are very accessible, especially for a salon brand. The bang for your buck is massive here. I love a responsible company and Amika’s commitment to the environment is admirable. The products are excellent and there is something for everyone.

My holy grail product from Amika is no doubt The Wizard. I use it every time I wash my hair and it makes the most noticeable difference in my routine. If you are unsure where to start, I recommend testing some shampoo and conditioner combinations and expanding to styling products from there.
