Best Way To Reapply Sunscreen Over Makeup

Supergoop Poof Powder, how to reapply sunscreen over makeup

Sunscreen is such an important part of your daily skincare. It is vital you incorporate it into your daily routine and know when and how to reapply SPF. Once in the morning is never enough! Reapplication is vital for your skin’s protection, not only when you’re at the beach and outside all day, but every day. Of course those of us who wear makeup up are faced with the challenge of not wiping off our foundation, concealer, blush, and everything else we work so hard to perfect. Below I’m sharing the best way to reapply sunscreen over makeup.

Best Way To Reapply Sunscreen Over Makeup

Fear not, friends, it is possible to apply sunscreen over your makeup! I’ll be sharing a few different ways to do so, as well as my favorite sunscreens below. Regardless of whether you are wearing makeup on your face, just eyes and concealer, or a full face of makeup, reapplication of sunscreen is imperative. Sunscreen protects our skin from harmful UV rays keeping us looking young, protecting us from skin damage, and worse. Broad Spectrun sunscreen protecting from both UVA and UVB rays is best.

Do You Need To Reapply Sunscreen Over Makeup

Yes! Sunscreen has a limit to the protection it provides throughout the day. Depending on your activities or if you touch your face, you can sweat or wipe it off. If you are outdoors, sweating, getting dirty, or wiping or touching your face, you should reapply at least every two hours. For an average day or if you spend more time indoors, every four to five hours should be good.

The sun protection factor (SPF) level will also play into the length of its effectiveness. Sunscreen SPF 50 will last longer than the SPF 30.

How To Reapply Sunscreen Over Makeup

Create a Strong Foundation

It is really important to ensure you have a strong foundation of sunscreen under your makeup. This will protect you from the start of your day and allow you to place your makeup perfectly on top of your base layer as you want. You can find my post ‘What are the Best Sunscreens for Your Face‘ for my favorites to wear under your makeup.

Products that Double as Makeup

So many makeup products now have SPF in them. Grabbing a few to bring with you for reapplicaiton when wearing makeup is a great way to make sure your makeup stays fresh and looks good while maintaining your SPF barrier. Grab a tinted SPF for a base layer, layer the Supergoop Glow Stick for a highlighter, add the Shimmershade for your blush and eyeshadow, finishing up with an SPF setting spray. Your makeup does the work for you!

Mineral Powder and Brush

There are some amazing mineral SPF powders out there and many also have built in brushes! I bought one without a brush so I do carry a separate brush in my bag when I bring it along. These are also amazing for your hair part! The powder can keep goop out of your hair and not make it oily, while also protecting your skin.

Sunscreen Stick

Clear sunscreen sticks can be used to reapply sunscreen over your makeup. However, given you have to wipe them directly on your face, I recommend using these on lighter makeup looks.

SPF Spray

Spray sunscreen was an incredible invention, and though some sprays aren’t specifically for your face, but can certainly be used to reapply over your makeup in a pinch!

SPF Setting Spray

They also make makeup setting sprays that also have SPF! You can reset your makeup and add an extra layer of sun protection. This is a great way to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day.

Best Sunscreen To Reapply Over Makeup

Max Mineral Tinted Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45

I use this SPF 45 mineral sunscreen as my base layer of sunscreen under my makeup. It is a tinted sunscreen that sits nicely under my makeup lasting several hours. The tint helps to even out my skin and blemishes while moisturizing my skin. It is water-resistant and also great for sensitive skin.

Supergoop Poof Part Powder

I grabbed this part powder as an option for applying sunscreen over my makeup and the part in my hair. This is a mineral-based powder, SPF 30 protection. It helps absorb excess oils and blends well with my makeup or hair! The active ingredient is Zinc Oxide 24.7%.

Supergoop ReSetting Powder

Truthfully you only need this OR the Poof powder. Based on the ingredient list they are the exact same product packaged differently. If I found this one first I would have chosen this one for the easier application. The Poof Powder is a little messier and I usually use a brush to blend it into my part anyway when using it in my hair. The Resetting Powder also comes in four color options including translucent and has refills so you don’t have to toss the brush each time you run out. We love a reusable option that is less wasteful! Either way it’s still a great product, just don’t feel like you need both this and the Poof Powder.

Organic Makeup Setting Spray SPF 30

I love Coola sunscreen so when I found the setting sunscreen spray with SPF I loved the idea. Sunscreen has come such a long way over the years. I love the functional use of the setting spray plus the UV protection. This setting spray is moisturizing and lightweight, holds makeup in place all day, and refreshes skin while reducing shine. Active ingredients include hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, date palm, juniper, and peony plant cell extracts. This Coola Organic Setting Spray is perfect to spray on throughout the day every couple of hours to refresh your sunscreen and reapply over your makeup.

Supergoop Sunscreen Sticks

I promise this post isn’t an ode to Supergoop, but I do love their products! This sheer mineral stick is a great option for sunscreen in stick form. I personally don’t love how they feel on my skin and prefer a mist or a powder, but if you want to feel more a covered layer on your skin, this is a great one that can either go over or blend with your makeup depending which you choose. Supergoop has a mineral Sheer Stick, Glow Stick, and Unseen Sunscreen sticks for whatever your skin needs are!

UncompliKated SPF Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen

I love Kate Sommerville products, they are light, work great, and smell amazing. I love that this setting spray is SPF 50 for extra protection. Not only does it protect against the sun, but it reduces shine with silicone powder, hydrates with hyaluronic acid, and finishes with a soft focus. This is broad spectrum with active ingredients that include Avobenzone 3.00%, Homosalate 10.00%, Octisalate 5.00%, Octocrylene 10.00%, Oxybenzone 5.00%.
