For a long time, skincare was not a top priority of mine. As I got older, I realized that good skincare means looking younger and feeling better. It is ultimately a part of taking care of yourself better. In the new year, I have made ‘sticking to a skincare routine’ one of my resolutions and goals. While I’ve resolved that skincare is important, it’s even more paramount that I have a good quality but also affordable products. Skincare can run into the hundreds per product, so a whole routine could be thousands of dollars! While its a priority, I don’t want to go broke taking care of my face. Of course, affordability is relative, spoiler alert, I find these products to be absolutely worth the cost. The products you use have a major effect on your skin health and its look and feel. In this post, I’m sharing my current skincare routine and Dermalogica product review.
I learned about Dermalogica skincare brand years ago when I started my skincare journey outside of the drugstore brands I used in high school. I wanted something simple, gentle on my skin but still fight acne when needed. Above all, I wanted a simple process. I am not an 18-step skincare routine girly by nature, so it has to be simple. I have swapped products in and out, testing and trying different brands and product lines. Dermalogica is the one brand I continue to go back to, adding more and more products each time. I learned about Dermalogica’s cleanser first and my routine grew from there. I do like to add a disclaimer when I talk about skincare, I don’t have very sensitive skin. Keep reading to see how I review Dermalogica products and what I think is worth it and use repeatedly!
Developed in 1986, Dermalogica was founded by skin therapist, Jane Wurwand, whose history is rooted in skin education for skin therapists. They have tons of different lines and products so you can personalize your skincare routine. The products are all cruelty-free, gluten-free, and vegan as well as void of any artificial colors and scents. These products are also free of microbeads, S.D. alcohol, parabens, lanolin, and mineral oil.
Dermalogica has a commitment to sustainability with a Healthy Skin, Healthy Planet initiative. They have removed metal springs from their pumps which render most pumps non-recyclable. Dermalogica is recognized as a cruelty-free by PETA and Leaping Bunny. They partner with TerraCycle for free recycling of empties, and will meet or surpass their sustainability goals by 2025.
Dermalogica also focuses on social impact with mentorships, scholarships, and skills training. forfuture industry professionals. They aim to empower skincare professionals to unleash their potential by supporting professional grade training in underserved communities worldwide. The skincare brand works with programs such as Beauty Changes Lives for mentorship, training, and scholarship, Justice & Soul which empowers at-risk and trafficked people through professional cosmetology training, and Invest in Her Potential a non-profit certifying women as skin therapists from underserved communities in Vietnam.
Dermalogica Products In Order of Use
The first step in my evening skincare routine is the Pre-Cleanse. This deep cleansing oil removes makeup, sunscreen, pollutants, and oils from the skin. I use it every evening before bed at the start of my skincare routine to take off my makeup. It works great, just be careful of using it on your eyes. A separate eye makeup remover may be necessary for heavier make up, but Dermalogica insists that it is great fro even water-proof makeup!
I’m currently using the Special Cleansing Gel as my cleanser as the second step in my evening skincare routine and the first step in the morning. This is a naturally foaming Quillaja Saponaria cleaning skin of toxins and impurities while helping to remove excess oil. After washing my skin feels brighter and clearer. Since there aren’t any artificial colors or fragrances, there isn’t a strong scent, but there are extracts of balm mint and lavender which are soothing and calming.
You would generally choose this Ultra Calming Cleanser or the Special Cleansing Gel, there is no need for both. I wanted to note here because I’ve used this PH-balanced, non-foaming cleanser in the past and it is much gentler on skin and great for those with sensitivities. It does not foam and helps more with dryness or dehydration over oiliness like the Special Cleansing Gel. It is cooling and calming and does not leave any residue on the skin, while actively rinsing off makeup.
The daily microfoliant can be used daily to exfoliate skin. While it can be used daily, I generally only use it a couple of times per week in the evening, due to the want to reduce time spent on my skincare routine. Though even daily it is not at all a skin irritant. This rice-based powder exfoliant is activated in water and helps to reduce the appearance of pores, acne, dark spots, blemishes, and reddness. I certainly notice more brightness when I use this microfoliant than on. thedays when I don’t.
My favorite part about this toner is that it is in a spray bottle. I don’t know why all toner doesn’t come this way! It’s gentle and refreshing with Soothing Arnica, Balm Mint and Lavender. I spray it on after cleansing or exfoliating in the morning and evening. Multi-Active Toner helps prep skin for proper moisture absorption.
The toner can help rehydrate skin similar to the products in this post: How to Rehydrate Skin Quickly. Though this is a toner and not a facial spray, it has similar effects. Toner is more for skin prepping and has a cleansing effect and reduces the size of open pores.
This moisturizer has Active HydraMesh Technology™ to infuse skin with moisture for 48 hours and helps prevent against environmental stress. I like this moisturizer with grapeseed extract, Vitamin C and Vitamin E, but it is heavier than I prefer, so I will typically only use it at night, and use a lighter moisturizer during the daytime.
This morning and nighttime eye treatment lifts, firms, cools, and reduces signs of stress around the eyes. I love the tube and appliquator so you aren’t sticking fingers into a jar and spreading bacteria. The cooling-gel with Sea Water Extract and Arctic Algae reduce puffiness and redness naturally and the formula works with your natural microbiome to brighten and energize the eyes. This is one of my favorite products of Dermalogica’s, and while they don’t specifically note that it is anti-aging, firming and reducing signs of stress seems to do the trick. However if you are looking for anti-aging products, start here for signs of skin aging and age smart products.
You can’t leave the house without sunscreen! I’ve used the Prisma Protect SPF 30 since it was a new product and I love the lightweights specially formulated face spf moisturizer. It is great for all skintypes, the Broadspectrum SPF fights against UV damage, while the Sage helps to maintain an even skintone. I wrote about this sunscreen years ago in this post: Best Sunscreens for the Face.
Suffice to say, I love this sunscreen. It protects against future skin aging and promotes brighter, even skin. It is also not oily and helps boost skin’s natural luminosity. I’ve used this product for years, and it comes in a slim bottle that is great for traveling. If you prefer a higher SPF, check out these other options!
Is Dermalogica Worth It?
I really love Dermalogica, and find the cost to be 100% worth the money. While absolutely not a drugstore brand, and also not La Mer, the cost falls in the middle of the road in the no-nonsense 100% skincare focused brand. Dermalogica has excellent quality products, a strong focus on sustainability and I’ve had fantastic experiences with everything I have tried.
When I use certain products there is an immediate noticeable difference, like the Daily Microfoliant showing immediate brightness and the Stress Positive Eye Lift Mask, moisturising and brightening with a fantastic cooling effect. However it took longer, about a month to notice the effects of the Pre-Cleanse and Special Cleansing Gel, but I have healthy skin that looks brighter every day now. With these products I’ve noticed clearer, brighter skin with less puffiness and reddness. Next on my list to try is the Dermalogica BioLumin-C Vitamin C Serum.
