Growing up I always had hair accessories in my hair like headbands, bows, and barrettes! I loved the Bair Waldorf-inspired style of always wearing hair accessories. I still love the idea but had to make the styles look more mature. I can’t be in my late-twenties still wearing the same styles as I did in middle school, so I’m sharing my favorite ways to wear barrettes with you as an adult below and in my Youtube video!
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair
For the below styles, I started with my hair in messy curls. If you are starting with clean hair, add some texture spray and/or dry shampoo to add some grip for the styles and barrettes. Below are ten different styles to wear with spring clip barrettes, embellished bobby pins, and snap clips. These can be interchanged between styles and mix and matched!

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Front Pulled Back
For this first style take a 1in section of hair on either side of your face. Pull it back to meet in the back of your head. Grab a barrette to secure into place.
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Side Swept
On the side of your head that you have more hair, pull a few pieces back away from your face. Slide the barrette in to secure.
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Half-Back Braid
Pull the top section of your hair to the back of your head and braid. Pull on pieces of your braid out to make bigger. Secure at the bottom with a rubber band and cover with your barrette.
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Adorned Dutch Braid
On the side of your head with the most hair, do a dutch braid until you get to your ear, then loosely braid the rest of the way. Secure with a rubber band and pull to make bigger. Add small clips and bobby pins to the braid to adorn.
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Messy Bun with Side Braid
With your bubbly dutch braid pull all of your loose hair up into a high messy bun and secure with regular bobby pins. Pin up the loose hairs at your neck with decorative bobby pins and clips.
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Barrette Row
Style your hair however you choose, I have mine styled in messy curls. On the side of your head that you have the least hair, start to add clips down the side of your head. Add as many or as few as you want, the more the merrier here!
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: French Braid with Clips
On the side with the most hair, start to French braid. Where you want the braid to stop, add several clips to secure into place. Loosen the bottom if you braided farther than the clips.
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: French Twist
To create a french twist, gather all of your hair at the nape of your neck and twist up your head vertically. With the excess hair that extends past the top of your head, continue to twist and fold back down. Tuck behind the original twist, Secure with bobby pins. Then along the side of the twist, add a decorative barrette.
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Bubble Ponytail
Start by gathering the top layer of hair at the crown of your head. Secure with a rubber band. Pull another section of hair back from your ears and add to the first ponytail. Then pull pieces of hair through to make this first section bubbly. Pull back another section of hair and add to the next ponytail, and continue down your hair until you get to the end. Pull each section out to make bubbly. Over each clip, add a barrette.
How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair:Messy Ponytail with Barrettes
Pull your hair up into a messy ponytail. It helps if you add some texture spray and some messy curls. Right above your ear add several clips until they are lined up all the way to your ponytail. Finally, wrap a piece of hair around the ponytail to hide the scrunchie or rubber band and secure it with a bobby pin.
