How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: 10 Cute Ideas

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: 10 Cute Ideas, hair tutorial

Growing up I always had hair accessories in my hair like headbands, bows, and barrettes! I loved the Blair Waldorf-inspired style of always wearing hair accessories. I still love the idea but had to make the styles look more mature. And I can’t be in my thirties still wearing the same styles as I did in middle school, so I’m sharing my favorite ways to wear barrettes with you as an adult below and in my Youtube video!

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair

For the below styles, I started with my hair in messy curls. If you are starting with clean hair, add some texture spray and/or dry shampoo to add some grip for the accessories and barrettes. Below are ten different styles to wear with spring clip barrettes, embellished bobby pins, and snap clips. These can be interchanged between styles and mix and matched!

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Front Pulled Back

This first style is super simple. Take about a 1-inch section of hair from either side of your face. Pull it back to meet in the back of your head. Grab a barrette to secure it into place. I love this circle barette with the open center, the negative space creates a really cool effect.

This next style works best with a side part. On the side of your head you typically have more hair. Pull a few pieces back away from your face. Slide the barrette in to secure.

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Half-Back Braid

For this style, you will start with a braid. Pull the top section of your hair to the center of your crown at the back of your head. Start a braid with the loose top section and secure it at the bottom with an elastic. Pull on the side pieces of your braid out to make it bigger and more bubbly, then cover the elastic with a clip.

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Adorned Dutch Braid

This is one of my favorite styles. Start by setting your hai into a side part. On the side of your head with the most hair, do a dutch braid until you get to your ear, then loosely braid to the ends. Secure it with a rubber band and pull the outside edges of the braid to make it bigger. Add small clips and bobby pins throughout the braid to the braid to adorn.

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Messy Bun with Side Braid

Start with a bubbly dutch braid on the side of your head as in the previous style. Then, pull all of your loose hair up into a high messy bun with the braid and secure it with regular bobby pins. Pin up the loose hairs at the base of your neck with decorative bobby pins and clips.

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Barrette Row

Style your hair however you choose whether it be curled, straight, etc. I have mine styled in messy curls/waves. Part your hair in a side part. On the side of your head that you have the least hair, start to add clips down the side of your head to hold hair away from your face. Add as many or as few as you want, the more the merrier here! This is a simple style for a fun look with clips.

In the second image above, I wore these fun celestial clips in my hair to the Eras tour!

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: French Braid with Clips

Start this style with a side part and your hair already styled in curls, waves, or straight. On the side with the most hair, start to French braid. Stop the braid behind the ear, where you end the braid, and add several clips to secure it into place. If you have small clips or really thick hair you may also need to secure it with a clear elastic. Finally, pull on sections of the braid to loosen. Then, unfurl the bottom if you braided past where your clips landed.

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: French Twist

To create a French twist, gather all of your hair at the nape of your neck and twist up your head vertically as if you are creating a tight ballerina bun. But instead of curling in a circle around itself, twist straight upwards. If you have long hair that extends in the twist past the top of your head, continue to twist and fold back down on itself. Tuck the loose excess behind and under the original twist, then secure with bobby pins as you would a bun. Finally, along the side of the twist, add a long decorative barrette.

How to Wear Barrettes in Long Hair: Bubble Ponytail

To create a bubbly ponytail, start by gathering the top layer of hair at the crown of your head. Secure with an elastic. Pull another section of hair back from above your ears and add to the first ponytail and secure all of it with an elastic. Then pull the edges of the secure section of hair to make this first section more voluminous and bubbly. Repeat these first two steps and continue down your hair until you get to the base of your neck. With the final loose ponytail, add a couple more elastics around the whole hair so you have no more loose ends and all hair is secured. Pull each section out to make it bubbly. Over each elastic, add a barrette.

Pull your hair up into a messy ponytail. It helps if you add some texture spray and some messy curls. Right above your ear add several clips until they are lined up all the way to your ponytail. Finally, wrap a piece of hair around the ponytail to hide the scrunchie or rubber band and secure it with a bobby pin. Then include several clips up the side of your head right behind your ear.
