How to Wear Waffle Knit Sweaters

How to Wear Waffle Knit Sweaters

Sweaters aren’t sparse this time of year, but there are varying types to choose from. I wear sweaters just about everyday, but my favorite are waffle knit sweaters! I love the unique knit and chunky styles!

What is a Waffle Knit Sweater?

Waffle knit is a square woven pattern, like you’d see in a waffle (yum). You’ll notice the pattern in these chunky knit sweaters look like the same material as thermal, just on a much larger scale. It’s a loose knit from soft material, that lets air through.

Waffle knit sweaters come in many styles. Typically in a chunky and loose style sweater, worn casually. You can dress it up a bit, but your overall look will be generally relaxed and super comfy

Mix Textures

Waffle knit is such a great texture, the best way to style the sweaters are to combine them with a complimentary piece. There are tons of options, but my favorite so far, are leather, silk, suede, and velvet. All great options and complimentary textures. I look at mixing textures similarly to mixing prints: Only mix large with small. Waffle knit, being your large print, would mix well with small textures being tighter knits and smoother styles.

Below I paired my waffle knit cardigan with a cami, faux leather mini skirt, and booties. I love the mix of textures with the leather and the waffle knit because one is super chunky and the other is so smooth! Playing with textures is one of my favorite parts of styling, so I encourage you to play too!

Style With a Skirt

Skirts have a tendency to dress up an outfit no matter what you wear with them. Short or long, dressy or not, skirts are usually the key to elevating an outfit. So, even though jeans are my day to day, you’ll see me styling a lot of skirts on my blog and instagram for a more interesting style.

Try A Waffle Knit Sweater Dress

Sweater dresses are probably your most dressed up option for waffle knit. This way you can pair it with heels or my preferred option, boots. I don’t have a styled waffle knit sweater dress to show you, but I love sweater dresses. They are so comfortable but look super chic!

Pair with Jeans and Winter Boots

My most common outfit in the winter would absolutely be jeans, booties, and a sweater. I love mixing colors and try not to always wear just plain blue jeans. With this outfit below, I went with a winter white style. Yes, it’s definitely ok to wear white jeans in the winter!

Wear it Oversized

An oversized waffle knit sweater is great, because it adds to the casual style of the garment itself. Pairing an oversized version with knee high or over-the-knee boots styled as a dress, is a fun way to make it look like a sweater dress! Although, I do recommend wearing Spanx or something underneath since the sweater is not functionally made to be a dress the arm holes won’t allow for great range of motion. Another option for an oversized style would be to pair with jeans or leggings. This is my go-to travel look!
