All summer long, I crave cool refreshing drinks. It’s too hot in Texas, and they are a great way to enjoy the evening outside without melting! I always love a good margarita, so adding extra fresh fruit and flavors is so fun! The other day I had too much watermelon for the container, so I decided to make a watermelon margarita recipe to use some of it! Below I outline instructions on how to make it, and I filmed a great how-to video for this delicious and refreshing summer cocktail.
You’ll need a few bar tools to create this watermelon margarita recipe. In my opinion, if you enjoy an occasional cocktail, you’ll want to keep some of the standard bar tools on hand. I have a great bar cart in my apartment that I love, which holds all of my necessary tools. You can buy them as needed, but there are great sets online you can grab as well. I love this gold set from Crate and Barrel, but if you’re looking for something more affordable, try this amazon set (just look for stainless steel)!

What you’ll need for your Watermelon Margarita:
Shaker
Muddler
Jigger
Citrus Squeezer
Lime
Watermelon- cut, no rind
2oz of your preferred tequila – I love Casamigos
1oz Citrus Liqueur- I love Cointreau
Glass of cubed ice

Step 1: Muddle Your Watermelon
Add 2-3 pieces of cubed watermelon into your shaker. Seedless is best. Muddle with your muddler until mostly juice.
Step 2: Squeeze Lime
Cut your lime in half, then slice the edges off as well so both ends are open. Place your lime into your citrus squeezer, and squeeze until well juiced. I typically flip the halves over onto each side to make sure I get all of the juice!
Step 3: Add Ice, Tequila, and Liqueur
Add your ice gently to not splash the fruit juice. Then take your jigger and pour tequila into the 2oz side, and then pour into shaker. Flip your jigger over, and pour your citrus liqueur into the 1oz side, then pour into shaker.
Step 4: Shake, shake, shake!
Place your lid on top of the shaker securely, and shake vigorously for several seconds. Once the shaker is frosty on the outside, you’re good!
Step 5: Pour into a glass
Take off the lid and expose the strainer, or if your shaker doesn’t come with a strainer, you’ll need a separate one. Pour over ice into a rocks glass. (Mine are on clearance right now for $1.97!). Sometimes with muddled fruit, it gets stuck in the strainer, you’ll have to add a few extra shakes, or strain manually.
Step 6: Garnish & Enjoy!
Once your drink is poured over ice, garnish with a watermelon slice, and serve!
Watermelon Margarita Recipe Modifications
The best part about this watermelon margarita recipe is easily interchangeable! I use Cointreau’s The Original Margarita recipe and swap in my add-ins. This recipe can be quite strong, so if it’s too much liquor for your tastes just add a little bit of Club Soda or lime La Croix. This same recipe can be modified with different fruits or enhanced with spices.
In this summer cocktail recipe, specifically, you can also add basil, mint, or (unpickled) jalapenos or serrano peppers for some spice! Any of these will be added to be muddled with the watermelon in the beginning.
