My family was in town all weekend and early this week, I was so happy to see them and take a little break! That being said, I am actually late with this post, but I have something really exciting to tell you all! I started blogging a year ago this week. On August 14, 2015 I published my first post for a lifestyle blog called Coffee and Curls, and it really launched my passion for writing and blogging again! I have attempted to start a blog before, and was inconsistent and not committed, but this one was different. I made the decision to really start blogging, and I created milestones, deciding that if I was really committed, I would make the investments required to really create something amazing. I get a lot of questions about my process and how I got where I am now, so this post is about my path and the steps I took over the last year to progress.
1 year ago this week (Aug. 14) I published my first blog post. To be honest, I had no idea what I was doing. I took a few photos on my iPhone and wrote a few sentences and posted them on my domain-less site. However, the first step to my blogging carer was to just post consistently. I really didn’t tell many people about it, and I wasn’t super into social media, but I wanted to figure it out.
I made a goal to post consistently for four months, yes four months, and then I would invest in my blog by purchasing a domain. At that point I needed to choose a name. Knowing I wanted to change, I drew from what I was focusing on the most at that time. I had just completed my first marathon and in between fashion posts, I was writing one post a week on my training updates. So, Running in Heels was born. I wanted something that could encompass more than just fashion, nothing that would corner me into a location or a specific theme. Running in Heels allowed me to write about fashion, running, and my life as a busy 20 something just trying to figure things out.
I knew, though that I needed a focus to start. Once I had a clear plan for this blog, I bought hosting and a theme from Etsy. I decided exactly what Running in Heels would be a fashion and style blog. While it is constantly evolving, fashion is the main theme of Running in Heels and is my true purpose of starting to blog in the first place.
After that, I had all of the tools and everything was created, next is just growth. Finding new places to get my URL and name out there. I am a Social Media Manager in my day job, but I for some reason never put my skills into practice on my blog. (It was most likely my lack of confidence and content since I was still taking my own photos at the time.) As I started this SMM position I really gained the missing confidence because other people had confidence in me. It’s like I was trusted with real companies’ accounts and I realized that all I was missing was the confidence to put my knowledge int action. (Its working for all of us, FYI.)
I have had a lot of success with my process so far I realize because of how far I have gotten in this past year. But I took my time, I wanted to do it right. There is no overnight success in blogging and there is still a really long way to go.
I want to say thank you to the people who were here at the beginning and especially those who stayed and who keep reading as Running in Heels evolves and grows. (Hi Mom!) I hope you are all here for another year, but more importantly, I am so happy you are here now. I would love to get to know you better, please comment below and tell me who you are!
